Homemade Powder Laundry Soap

If you are looking for a quick and easy way to save money and also clean your home in a more natural and safe way here is one way you can do that. This recipe takes only about 10 minutes to do and it makes enough to last my family almost 2 months. The ingredients are very cost effective and the homemade Powder Laundry soap is easy to use.

All of the ingredients can be found at my local Wal-Mart, Target, and Walgreens so they are not hard to find at all. Here is a price estimate for this soap –

Fels-Neptha – $.98 per bar

Washing Soda – Rounded to $3.00 a box

Borax – Rounded to $4.00 a box

You can use both the borax and the washing soda for many batches. I can normally get just about 6 batches out of the washing soda and 8 out of the borax. So, if we buy 6 bars of Fels-Naptha and then a box of each of the other ingredients that would cost us $13.00. And this would then last my family about 10-12 months. And for $13 you can’t beat that price. I love how this cleans by itself but to change it up sometimes I add a powdered softener to it just for added scent and to cut down on the static during the winter. The process is easy and requires no cooking.

For one batch use –

1 bar Fels-Naptha soap

1 cup Borax

1 cup Washing Soda (not baking soda)

I use my food processor to make this easier and faster. I start with using the shredding blade and shredding my Fels-Naptha.

Then I remove my shredding blade and insert my chopping blade. I pour my shredded soap into the bottom of the processor and add the powders on top. Then I turn it on and leave it for awhile. My goal is a very fine powder.

The longer you can leave it the better.

Once it is done I pour the soap into an ice cream bucket for easy storage. I can fit 4 batches in my bucket and I love making a lot when I do it so I don’t have to think about it for awhile. Now, I use 1 tablespoon per load in my super capacity HE top loader washer. I hope that you enjoy this recipe!

  1. Love it. I have been planning to make my own soap. Thanks for the recipe. You mentioned a powdered softener. Is there a kind that you prefer? I think getting something to use for the static would be good.
Also, have you ever used this mixture on cloth diapers, obviously sans the softener? Was it effective?
    Thanks.
