The Lord’s Day

I hope that you all had the opportunity to rest yesterday because not only as it Mother’s Day but more importantly it was the Lord’s Day. For my family we spent the day on my parent’s farm after our morning worship service. It was so nice to sit outside and build relationships and enjoy God’s creation and to just “be” for a little while. That is what I love about Sundays. I do very little work and I allow myself to rest during whatever activity I choose to do. It prepares me for the week.

The Lord's Day

Do you alter your normal routine to allow yourself a little more “rest” on Sundays? Even if you are at the park, watching a game, or even baking for your family do you strive to achieve spiritual and mental rest on the Lord’s Day?

Mark 2:27 – And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

I think it is a balance between being a little too legalistic by saying that it is wrong to do dishes or laundry on Sunday or you shouldn’t take a walk or bake a cake because that isn’t restful and then the other side where no one can see a difference in your routine on the Lord’s Day. I love to bake so sometimes I do bake on Sunday but I know for others that isn’t restful so for them it seems like work. Same way with yard work or anything really, if it is restful and fulfilling to you than who am I to say it is wrong?

Exodus 20:8 – Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

The main thing that I think we must remember is that as Christians the Lord’s Day should look different in our lives. Corporate worship is mandated in Scripture, it is not an optional event. Rest on the Sabbath is also commanded and something that must be held in high esteem. How you achieve that rest or where you engage in worship is between you and God, but I encourage you to strive to have a Lord’s Day that is different from the others in the week and that allows for rest and refocus for the coming week. How do you keep the Lord’s Day different in your home?

  1. This is such an important reminder to really step back from the busy hustle and bustle of every day and just “be” Sunday is our family day, we never make plans except to be with family and friends.
