Treat RSV Naturally

During the Christmas holiday you might have read or seen on my Facebook or Instagram profiles that my poor little Elizabeth was really sick. We finally ended up in the ER on the evening of her first Christmas because I was worried about congestion in her chest. During our visit there they confirmed that she did have RSV but they were also very surprised. They were very surprised at how good she looked. They said that the pediatric floor was full of infants and toddlers that were requiring intense treatment to beat RSV this season and they just couldn’t understand how she wasn’t dehydrated and her lungs were completely clear. I told the doctor I had been working really hard at home to keep her well. She didn’t seem very interested in what I had been doing but I wanted to share with you today what I was doing to hopefully help keep more children comfortable during this terrible illness. Here is how I was able to treat RSV naturally Essential Oils – I used “Breathe Easier” and Eucalyptus oils from Edens Garden to help her breathe better and rest more comfortable. I would apply the oils every 4- hours to her chest, back and neck. Then when I would lay her down in bed I would add a few drops onto her sheets. I also kept a pot of water on the stove on medium heat (hot but not boiling) with a few drops of oils added to the water. It helped to keep the air in the house more moist and also helped to diffuse the oils into the air.

Garlic – I used a garlic infusion on her feet. Yes, her feet. I applied a thick layer of a plant based jelly (you can use Vaseline if you have that) to the arch of her feet. Then I put a layer of fresh crushed garlic on the top of the jelly. Then I wrapped her whole feet in gauze to keep the garlic in place. I rinsed her foot and reapplied every 12 hours. Garlic is a natural antibiotic and since a baby can’t take crushed garlic by mouth, applying it to their foot is the fastest way to get it into their bodies. Garlic on their feet can be compared to hooking them up to an IV of antibiotics.

Onions – I applied an onion poultice to her chest three times a day. I began by cutting an onion into chunks and boiling them in a small amount of water until the onion was soft. I then poured off the remaining water and stirred in enough flour to coat the onions. Using a cotton washcloth or old t-shirt I placed the onion “paste” on the cloth and rolled it up (kind of like a burrito) to hold all of the onion inside. Then I placed the cloth on her chest and covered it with a warm rice packet. You can also use a heating pad or a towel warmed in the dryer.

Steam – In an effort to keep the congestion as thin as possible I used steam showers about every 2-3hours around the clock. I would stand in the bathroom with her while the shower was running as hot as possible. I would make sure to add more essential oils to her back and chest just before entering the bathroom to help things “move” even more. It also helped her to relax and many times she would settle in and nurse and then sleep after one of these steam treatments.

It was an exhausting week and required much more consistent work then just giving antibiotics every 12 hours but everything I did was safe, natural, and had no side effects. Please remember that I am no doctor and these treatments may not be suitable for everyone. Please use wise judgment and seek professional medical help for you and your family when needed. But, be encouraged my friend that you can treat RSV naturally and at home.
