Online Spelling Games – VocabularySpellingCity

Spelling has always been one of the hardest subjects for me to “find our groove” with. I find most spelling books boring and monotonous and the words they choose are often times not words my child would be using on a regular basis. But one thing I have discovered is that with VocabularySpellingCity and the help of their online spelling games we can be much more consistent in our spelling work. Once I get the list set up each week and choose the assignments for each child they can log into their personal account and complete the assignments with little to no oversight from me.

I received a one year’s Premium membership to VocabularySpellingCity  ($29.99 for up to five students) for review recently and have been using it with all three of the older children in grades 2, 4, and 6 but this program offers activities for children in any grade from Kindergarten through 12th grade. I love that I can create my own lists from words that they need to practice or from our current unit study even or, if I don’t have any specific words I can choose from the almost countless published lists available on the website. The lists are organized in specific categories on the “Teaching Resources” page. There are lists for everything from math to geography and even science. Or you can view the lists by grade level. You can also access lots of language lessons and many even have videos that go with them! With the premium membership you can even put writing assignments into each child’s list and include videos specific to things that they need to work on as they write.

I was so pleased that they not only offer online spelling games but even have the option for children to work on vocabulary of their list words as well. With activities like the flashcard in the screen shot above they see the word written out, here the word said, and see it used in a sentence. This makes any spelling program even better in my opinion because being able to spell words doesn’t do much for a person if you don’t know how to use a word or what it means.

Not only does VocabularySpellingCity offer great games and multiple children accounts with each premium membership but the record keeping side of this site is amazingly comprehensive. You can track the activities that each student engages in and see how they are doing on their tests and quizzes. Each child has their own unique log in name and password, which my children were so excited about. Once they log in they can see their list for the week, print their handwriting pages that are assigned, and even print flashcards for the week.

The graphics for each game are colorful and fun! And overall my family is loving VocablarySpellingCity and all of their help to make our spelling curriculum fun and functional. So, if you are looking for a way to spice up your spelling list work, check out the games, vocabulary work, printable flashcards and handwriting sheets, and more that are offered with a premium membership to VocabularySpellingCity.com!
