Learn to Sew – Rosie’s Doll Clothes Patterns

My girls have been so interested and begging to learn to sew this year and the lessons and patterns tat we have been reviewing have been a great place to start. Rosie’s Doll Clothes Patterns is an online site with videos and patterns to teach young girls ages 8 and up how to sew. And what better sewing projects to start on than clothes for their dolls. The projects have only taken us 2-3 hours to do and that was with one adult helping two girls. One on one would go even quicker I am sure.

I received 12 months of online access to Rosie’s “Learn How to Make Doll Clothes Video Course with 8 Free Doll Clothes Patterns” This course retails for $47.89 and comes with everything that you will need to be sewing doll clothes like a pro in no time. This program give you access to over 130 how-to and troubleshooting videos and there are even some “Cool Tips” videos too. Even though I have been sewing for years some of the “tricks” and “tips” she offers have taught me things that I never knew. I am sure that even the most seasoned seamstress is sure to learn something.

Though my girls have already been introduced to sewing and knew some of the basics they found the videos fun and engaging. They were giggling at some of Rosie’s comments and were telling me how they need some of the equipment that she showed them so I know that they were paying attention. We have watched several weeks worth of the video lessons and my girls continue to get excited when I tell them that need to do their next sewing “lesson”.

I set it up with my mother to come and help sew with the girls one day because it is a little “stressful” to have a newborn and a toddler and two older girls needing my help to sew. Plus, I love encouraging intergenerational bonds and relationships. My mom loves to sew and has been sewing for years so I knew that she could offer my girls lots of knowledge and insight. It was so special to see my girls engage in a meaningful way with my mom. I still remember my mom teaching me to sew and now she is teaching my daughters. That is such a blessing and I don’t take it lightly.

The free patterns that come with this course are pdf files that have two parts. There are the written step by step instructions and then the pattern pieces. I love the way that the patterns are designed as they print on regular printer size paper and then Rosie shows them how to attach the pattern pieces. There is no buying special paper or running to the office store for expensive printing. While the videos instruct the girls to glue the pieces together we found that tape was much easier to use and made the pattern pieces much sturdier.

Cutting out our pieces

The patterns that I received are made to fit an 18 inch “American Girl” type doll but she also offers patterns for 18 1/2 inch “Cabbage Patch” type dolls as well. I was so impressed with the variety of patterns offered. Girls can sew many different pieces from categories such as accessories, bedtime, beach, summer, or winter patterns. You can purchase patterns separately or in a bundle package. These patterns are a great way to use up “scrap” fabric from other projects that you, or someone else that you know, may have just laying around, and make something beautiful, fun, and useful.

Getting some help from Grandma

My girls are so proud of the clothing that they have been sewing and they are already talking about what piece they want to buy the pattern for next. They have fabric picked out to sew their friends some really great Christmas presents too! I love how comfortable they are becoming with the sewing machine and how free I can be to let them try it on their own and learn from their mistakes. Because I didn’t have to rush and spend a lot of money for supplies for each sewing project I am always happy to say “yes when they ask to sew. And they are always happy to show off their work to anyone that is willing to look! And now they wanted to show you all the nightgowns that they made for their dolls!

What a feeling of accomplishment that these projects have given my girls.
