Poem

I came across this poem the other day and it was very thought provoking to me. Even though we don’t know the number of our days here on earth we know that the days that our children will live under our influence are numbered and then we will send them out to make their own life choices. May I choose wisely with how I spend my time so that I am investing in things that matter and not things that will “pass away”.

Numbered Days
As I was washing dishes
At the kitchen sink
A thought crossed my mind
That made me stop and think
Suppose I knew the number
The exact amount of days
That I had left on earth
How would I change my ways?
Would I travel far away
To dreamed-of-charming places
Or enjoy the speed and thrill
Of joining horseback races?
Would I, on borrowed time
Much wordly pleasure seek?
Or search for caring ways
To help the sick and weak?
My thoughts went to our children
And in my heart I knew,
I want to leave an example
That they can follow too.
Lord, wisdom to teach them kindness
Your love and Word impart
And pause to write it carefully
On the tables of the heart.
To spend some time in cleaning
Dark corners of heart and mind
And fill them both with treasures
Of a far more valuable kind.
Then, what joy shall be that morning!
When God shall call us home
To live with Him forevermore
In a mansion to call our own.
