Whole Wheat Bread Recipe

whole wheat bread recipe

If you have been hunting and hunting for a whole wheat bread recipe you need to look no further. This recipe is light enough for sandwiches and hearty enough for your favorite soup. It uses all natural ingredients and is super easy to  mix up for even the most inexperienced bread maker. The one thing to keep in mind is that many of the whole wheat flours on the store shelves now days are course and dry. You need a flour that is a smooth texture to make this dough turn out right. I have the pleasure of having access to a grain mill so I can grind my own flour, but I also love the Prairie Gold brand that I found at my local Wal-Mart.

I love the fact that this bread has very few ingredients but the ones that it does call for are easy to find and all natural. Make sure to do plenty of kneading for this bread either by hand or using your stand mixer. And you will love the sweet, hearty goodness of this whole wheat bread recipe.

Whole Wheat Bread Recipe – Our Heart and Home

2 1/2 cups warm water

2 Tablespoons yeast

3 Tablespoons butter

4 Tablespoons honey or molasses

5 1/2 – 6 cups whole wheat flour

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

Mix the water and yeast together and let sit for 2-5 minutes until the yeast gets “foamy”. Add in your oil, salt, and sweetner of choice. Slowly add your flour until dough is able to be handled and isn’t overly sticky. Knead well. I usually leave my mixer to knead my dough for about 7-10 minutes after I add the last of my flour. Place in a greased bowl and allow to rise until doubled in size. Divide into two greased loaf pans and again allow to rise for about 30-45 minutes. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30-40 minutes or until golden and “hollow” sounding.

I love whole wheat bread. I also grind my own flour. Thanks for the recipe, I will give it a try. I add just a Tablespoon of potatoe flakes to each loaf of bread. I think it helps.
