Welcome Baby – Cloth or Disposable?

It is the age old question that often times divides mothers, “Do you use cloth or disposable diapers?”. I have used both. I continue to use both. And I honestly decided a long time ago not to feel guilty over the fact that I don’t cloth diapers from day 1 and my toddlers sleep in disposable diapers. Whichever diaper option you choose doesn’t define you as a mom. But for today’s post I am a cloth diapering momma and I am here to give you my top 3 things that I think you should consider when buying cloth diapers.

1. What is your main reason for using cloth? – For example, if your main goal is to safe money than something like a prefold and cover system is about the cheapest way to go. But if you are focused on living more “green” but still want as much ease and efficiency as you can get an all in one or a pocket might be just right for you. Here is a list of the basic cloth diapering options that are now on the market. These are just the basics.

  • Prefolds – These are fabric only diapers that require some type of cover over them to make them water proof.
  • AIO/AI2 – These diapers have the waterproof layer built in, have elastic around the leg and waist holes for a snug fit. These All in One or All in Two diapers are often size adjustable so that you buy one diaper for birth to potty training size.
  • Pocket Diaper – These diapers have an outer layer that is waterproof and has the elastic around the legs and waist and offers a soft layer inside that pulls moisture away from baby’s skin. These diapers must then be “stuffed” via the pocket to make them absorbent. Most are sold with the liners.
  • Fitted Diapers – These also require a cover or wrap but they are size specific and have closures unlike the prefolds. These diapers do not require folding and are snug fitting just like a disposable.

I have used all of the types above and honestly I can’t say that I have a favorite really. I like different styles for different stages and different body types. Some are cheaper than others and work better for different households and even react better to different water for washing. So if you are considering cloth diapers, I encourage you to talk to moms that live around you and see what diapers that they love and then visit a store where you can get your hands on the different styles. And just because choosing cloth or disposable doesn’t make you a better mom it is a big decision and isn’t an easy one. If you have any questions please feel free to ask in the comments and I will try my best to answer.
